ASPPA Annual 2013

If you have never attended ASPPA Annual and you are in the TPA business, you should!  This year’s ASPPA Annual was a great learning conference.  The conference had nearly 50 speakers who advised on topics ranging from generational issues to fee disclosure to defined benefit plan design. Kevin J. Donovan, Sheri Alsguth, Lynn Young and I attended the conference in National Harbor, MD.  One thing I love about this conference is that it is for everyone. Whether you run the operations or you are the technical expert in your office, you can find a session (during each time slot) that is just right for you.

I had the pleasure of facilitating one interactive learning lab entitled “How to Use Technology at the Conference”. We started the session by going over the impressive ASPPA Annual App and the discussion evolved into a conversation on various social media tools such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.  I really enjoy hearing how other people are using social media, specifically discussing others concerns, accomplishments, and ideas as to how social media is incorporated into their business.  Adam Pozek who discussed “Successful Relationship Management for Remote Work Environment” led another great technology related session.  It truly is amazing how technology is changing the way we work every day.

Kevin J. Donovan, Pinnacle’s Managing Partner, taught two technical sessions; one on “Deduction Issues” and one on “Cash Balance Plans, Combined Plans, & Legislative Development”.  Kevin continues to be a national pension leader in the area of cash balance design and it is always interesting to hear him speak on the topic.

Sheri Alsguth, a Senior Manager and Consulting Actuary at Pinnacle, attended the “March on Capitol Hill”, where she had an opportunity to speak with Blair Bjellos, a staffer for Representative Ted Poe (R- Texas) regarding current pension issues.  Sheri stated, “The experience was exciting. For the first time I felt like I was inside the process instead of on the outside.”

Overall, the conference was a great experience. I highly suggest pension professionals attend an ASPPA Annual conference in the future. I’ll see you there!
