Repeal of DOMA
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was passed in 1996. Section 3 prevented the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in United States vs. Windsor that Section 3 of DOMA was unconstitutional. The court’s decision had a tremendous impact in a variety of areas, including on retirement plans.
