### Defined Benefit Plans

“Defined benefit plan” is an industry term used to describe certain employer-sponsored pension plans. Such plans define the benefit that will be paid out at retirement or separation from employment. The employer makes an annual contribution to the plan in an amount that is considered to be adequate to provide these benefits. An actuary calculates this acceptable funding amount each year.

Defined benefit plans may permit significantly greater contributions than other plans, such as 401(k)/profit sharing plans. Employers can even sponsor a combination of plans to maximize their annual contributions and provide meaningful retirement benefits to their employees. This strategy can be very effective for firms with consistent cash flow, high profitability, and a significant income tax liability.
