Over 90% of the country’s qualified retirement plans are defined contribution. This is due to the decline in popularity of traditional defined benefit plans and the increase in popularity in 401(k)/profit sharing plans. The fastest growing plan type, however, is cash balance.

Cash balance plans address many of the aspects of a traditional DB plan that have made them less desirable:

- Cash balance plans provide a more “meaningful” (understandable) benefit to employees versus a traditional DB plan,
- Cash balance plans allows partners of professional groups to equalize benefits,
- Cash balance plans avoid lump sum swings due to interest rate shifts, and
- Cash balance plans provide age-neutral contributions for non-owners.
